A Little Party Never Killed Nobody! I was more than excited to be asked to open the Perth (Western Australia) premiere of The Great Gatsby with my lovely friend Bec dressed as flappers! I jumped at the chance and would … Continue reading
It’s nearly time for Baz Luhrmann’s version of the F.Scott Fitzgerald classic novel, The Great Gatsby, and whether you are looking forward to it or not (opinion seems to be divided on my Facebook page) it is definitely a great excuse to throw a Gatsby themed party for you and your dapper dans and flapper gals. I am personally really looking forward to going to the local Art Deco cinema in town to watch the film, and will be looking out for the dazzling deco details and fabulous costumes throughout.
Judging by past Luhrmann movies, it will be a visual feast, that’s for sure.
All you need to create your Gatsby themed get-together is a classic cocktail menu, deco inspired invites, glamorous decor, jazzy music, and a 1920s dress code.

I am going to buy this book on Amazon, it looks like the perfect guide to entertaining 1920s style…
Set the scene with your invitations from the word go and get your invitees excited. Sophistication is the key with a healthy dollop of fun. Be inspired by googling the images of different book covers like the one below and make an invite from one of those or make your own with a deco font, black and gold being a great colour scheme, and a head turner for sure.
Pinterest also has a wealth of ideas for invites.
You can go all out and head down to a party shop for the themed decor or go for a classier look and just have a few 1920s inspired decorative items strewn around to complement the theme.
Think gramophone, hanging lights, fans, champagne coupes, feathers and strings of pearls.

The Charleston is always a safe bet and could well lead to a Charleston contest at the party!
Try adding music by Stéphane Grappelli, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Cole Porter, Fats Waller, Billie Holiday, Al Bowlly and George Gershwin to the playlist and you won’t go far wrong.
If you have a spotify account try using my Art Deco Gal playlist to save some time!
Here is a snapshot of the movie’s soundtrack – which is one of the controversial aspects of this film, I would have liked to hear more traditional music being a massive Jazz fan but I am intrigued…
Specify a dress code and ask your party goers to ‘Go Gatsby’ and party like it’s 1929!
Gents could don a suit and bow-tie, slick back the hair, and grab a stogie.
Or – they can put on the spats, white scarf, monochrome jazz shoes and trilby and rock the gangster look!
For all of the budding Daisy Buchanan’s out there, why not try giving your hair a marcel or finger wave, slick on some red lippy and pop on a cute flapper-esque bobbed wig and adorn it with a beautiful headpiece or fascinator?
Feathers, pearls, dropped waists, embellishments, and a long cigarette holder will complete the look.
